The City of Independence has a Council-Manager form of government with a Mayor, two at-large and four in-district councilmembers. The six councilmembers along with the Mayor are the elected policy-making body. The City Council appoints the City Manager who is responsible for implementing and carrying out the policies of the Council. City Councilmembers serve a 4 year term.
