What's Up With the League
New Homepage for the LWVKC Website
By David Mountjoy, Technology Committee

Check out our new website homepage! It’s been simplified for ease of use and readability. We hope you'll find it engaging and easy to navigate. It’s the same valuable information, with a fresh design.

Please log in to lwvkc.org to see the new look. If you find a problem, please email the Website Chair at technology@lwvkc.org

Membership Minute
By Laura Marcus-Mountjoy, Membership Chair

Welcome to our new, as well as renewing, members! We're averaging three new members per week, so please welcome those new faces you see at meetings and volunteer events. If you've just joined us, be sure to complete our Member Survey, so we can help you get involved at your comfort level. Click here:  Member Survey.

Be sure to log in to lwvkc.org and check the calendar for our Mix & Mingle events, now in four different areas for the convenience of our members. Northlanders can attend the April 7 (that's today!) event at the The Peanut in the Northland. Look for more MIx & Mingle happy hours in June.

Want to volunteer? Log in to lwvkc.org, click on Committees, and sign up for the Volunteer Corps. You’ll receive an email every Thursday with lots of volunteer opportunities. Want to volunteer for public facing events? Log in to lwvkc.org, and under Forms click on DEI/Non-Partisan Training Wait List..

84% of School Board Candidates participated in LWVKC forums
By Elizabeth Darr, Forums Committee Chair

The Forums Committee conducted eight forums for local school board candidates prior to the April 7 election. An impressive 31 of the 37 candidates (or 84%) participated! For some of the candidates, our forum was their only opportunity to present themselves to the public, while others had multiple forums. You can watch the forums here or by going to YouTube.com and searching for LWVKC.

Letter to the Jackson County Legislature
By Melanie Busse, LWVKC President

The LWVKC/JCP maintains a strong interest in local government and actively tracks proceedings of local government bodies through its Observer Corps, including the Jackson County Legislature. Members of Observer Corps identified fundamental procedural challenges with the Jackson County Legislature during their observations over the past four years. These challenges resulted in recent budget implementation problems and other conflicts.

Due to the efforts of our Observer Corps, a letter including potential issues to be addressed was approved by the board, and sent to the Jackson County Executive and Legislators regarding the Jackson County Home Rule Charter that requires a formal Charter Review be conducted at least every 10 years. The last full review was done in 2010. SInce then, isolated Charter revisions seem to occur without the benefit of a comprehensive review process.

I want to thank Jo Holt and Diane Cordry Golden for their work on Observer Corps, and for bringing this issue before the board. Click here to read the letter and learn about the issues.

Annual Meeting - SAVE THE DATE!

By Melanie Busse, LWVKC President

The Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday, May 9, at the Trails West branch of the Kansas City Public Library, 11401 East 23 St. South, Independence, MO. We will gather for social time at 9:30 a.m. The meeting will start at 10. The meeting will be a hybrid meeting, meaning you may attend by Zoom. However, we would love to have you join us in person!

The annual meeting is a business meeting when members vote and adopt the local programming, the budget, and election of officers and directors for the ensuing year. Members will receive all materials for the annual meeting in writing, via a special edition of the eVoter called The Call, at least two weeks prior to the meeting. A quorum of at least 15% of voting members is needed, so please mark your calendar and attend the meeting if at all possible.

Members in Action
"Empowering Voters and Defending Democracy" at No Kings 3 Table

Our president, Melanie Busse, and many LWVKC members staffed our table at No KIngs 3. They registered voters, had conversations and shared flyers about League work, and lived up to the mission "Empowering Voters and Defending Democracy!"
